Accounting for Ecommerce Businesses
Simplify the finances for Ecommerce Businesses
Running an online business is rarely as simple as it looks from the outside. Orders come in and money lands in your account, but behind the scenes you’re juggling sales, stock, suppliers, platform fees, payouts, returns, VAT, and the challenge of working out what you’re actually making.
We specialise in ecommerce rather than dabble in it, so we understand how online businesses really work — whether you sell through your own website, Etsy, Amazon, Shopify, eBay, or a mix of all of them.
Our goal is to simplify the financial side of ecommerce so you can spend less time buried in spreadsheets and more time selling, serving customers, and growing. Whether you’re just getting started, growing quickly, or feeling behind and unsure where to begin, we can help you build stronger systems and make better decisions.

FAQs
Do I need to register for VAT for my ecommerce business?
You must register once your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period — that is any 12 months in a row, not your tax year or calendar year. It is easy to creep over it during a busy spell without noticing, so we help you keep an eye on it and register at the right time rather than late. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold if it suits your business, and we can talk you through whether that makes sense.
I sell on Amazon, Etsy and eBay – don’t they handle my tax for me?
No they don’t. Marketplaces now report seller information to HMRC, and in some cases they collect VAT on your sales for you, but that does not mean your tax is taken care of. You still need to record your income properly and declare it, and platform reporting to HMRC does not automatically mean tax is owed. It depends on your actual trading. We make sure your records reflect what is really happening across every channel.
Which accounting software do you use?
We work with cloud accounting software such as Xero and QuickBooks, along with ecommerce tools like A2X and Link My Books that pull your sales, fees and payouts through cleanly rather than line by line. If you are not set up yet, we will help you choose the right software and get it working with your sales platforms from the start.
I sell across several platforms and my bookkeeping is a mess. Can you help?
Absolutely! This is one of the most common issues ecommerce owners come to us with. Multiple platforms, fees, refunds and payouts get tangled quickly. We collate your accounts into one clear picture so you can see your income, costs and profit across everywhere you sell.
Can you help with stock and working out my actual profit?
Yes. Stock is one of the biggest reasons turnover and profit look so different in ecommerce. We help you account for stock purchases and costs properly so you know your true margins, not just your sales figures.
My bookkeeping is behind for me ecommerce business. Is that a problem?
Not at all, and you will not get any judgement from us. Plenty of people come to us behind on their bookkeeping or facing a deadline. We can get you caught up and back in control, then set things up so it does not pile up again.
Should I be a sole trader or run my ecommerce business as a limited company?
It depends on your profit, your plans and how you want to work, and it is rarely obvious from the outside. We can talk through the pros and cons for your situation so you make the right call.
What is Making Tax Digital and does it affect me?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is already underway. Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have been required to keep digital records and report quarterly since April 2026, with the threshold dropping to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. The figure they’re referring to as the theshold is your total turnover, not your profit. So if your shop turns over £60,000 but makes £25,000 after costs, you are still in scope. It is easy to assume you are under the line when you are not, which is exactly the kind of thing we keep an eye on for you.
How much do your ecommerce bookkeeping and accounting services cost?
Every ecommerce business is different, so we will give you a clear quote based on what you actually need. There will be a fixed monthly fee, agreed up front, with no surprise bills. Book a free consultation and we will talk through your business and the right level of support.
How do I get started working with Brush Up Accounting?
